How good is Rockin’ All Over The World, by the way? Quo at their absolute zenith, or maybe it’s the fact that IT’S FRIDAY NIGHT AND WOLVES HAVE BEATEN ASTON VILLA BY TWO GOALS TO NIL!
It’s easy to say this now, but there’s a certain beauty to a football match in a deluge. Best laid plans give way to the uncontrollable slips and slides that mother nature provides for us. Muddy shirts, sodden hair, something reminiscent of a battle of years gone by.
Two good, two bad? Here, how about two nil? Two goals for Wolves. Anyway, here are two very good and two not so bad from tonight’s mudfest from Molineux.
Do We Even Need to Say It?
There was no real reason to feel optimistic ahead of this game. We do well against the Villa, especially at home, but the form book out the window. This was 3rd v 20th, Champions League v Championship Elect, so in a season where there isn’t much to shout about, this has got to be the high water mark. In an age of streaming, Firesticks and the “Baller League”, this is a result good enough for a club shop DVD.
It was a scrappy game, not helped by the weather, or caused by the weather, however, Wolves won the muddy battle of Molineux. Two goals to nil, if you haven’t heard.
Whilst the turnaround hasn’t been miraculous, results like this show that there’s still fight and spirit within this team, and the ability to come up on top when it mattered. First the Arsenal result and now this, if our season had started in January, you’d be speculatively renewing your passport.
Who’s YOUR Favourite Gomes? Or non-Gomes?
Joao, Angel, Toti or Rodrigo, there’s a lot to be said for our quartet of Gomeseseses. Was it Joao’s lovely goal after Armstong’s beautiful touch? Was it Toti’s lovely defending to a clean sheet? Angel’s lovely turn as a late sub? Or Rodrigo’s lovely last minute goal to sign, seal and deliver a win for the Wolves?
Really, there’s actually too many good things to talk about here. I imagine m’colleague Kian is just writing the number 10 over and over in his ratings. 10s for everyone, apart from Joao, who gets a 20. Armstrong was great, and even Tchatchoua, who had a rough first half, really came out swinging in the second.
Sa made some lovely saves, and Mosquera saved the whole damn game with a goal line clearance. Basically if you wore a Wolves shirt in the last 24 hours, you did great.
It’s a Shame The Season Didn’t Start In January
Pretty much from January to today, we’ve been doing alright, a couple of wins, some good draws and some unlucky losses. Hardly a title challenging season, but when you look at this run, it’s really not bad, or doesn’t feel that bad.
There’s fight in this team, spirit in this team, and as they’ve shown on a few occasions, talent in this team. Am I possibly giddy after the result? There’s potential, but also 2026 hasn’t exactly been the most punishing of times to be a Wolves fan, but does carry the stone of 2025 with it.
Maybe this reads back horribly after a double stuffing from Liverpool next week, but for now, let’s just enjoy it.
We’re Going To Lose Joao Gomes
It’s not very often that players come to Wolves as legends, but after the #FreeJoaoGomes campaign that preceded his arrival, Joao Gomes has been a Wolves legend, and has filled the now hallowed #8 shirt without effort.
He’s fought hard on the pitch, worn the shirt with pride and given his all to the people of Wolverhampton. Off the pitch, he’s been a fantastic ambassador for the club, and spoken so candidly about his stutter.
So it does break your heart to know he’ll be off soon. Am I bitter? No, he should be playing for the best clubs in the world, but that doesn’t make the fact that we’re likely going to say goodbye to the Pitbull in the summer.
Still, what a journey. It’s been amazing.
