Matt Doherty to sign for Tottenham Hotspur
Only a few days ago Football.London broke the news that Jose Mourinho had identified Wolves wing-back Matt Doherty as one of his main transfer targets for this window and I think it’s safe to say that most Wolves fans didn’t really bat an eyelid and dismissed this rumour as exactly what it appeared to be – a rumour.
However, as the story started to unravel, twinned with Wolves’ links to Ainsley Maitland-Niles, it appears that Spurs’ interest in Matt Doherty is genuine and the player looks set to swap Wolverhampton with North London in an astonishing move that will see the end to his ten year stay at Molineux.
How much is Matt Doherty going to cost Spurs?
This detail of the transfer is the thing that is causing the most concern for Wolves fans and rightly so. Only Trent Alexander-Arnold has been involved in more goals from full-back over the past two Premier League seasons than Matt Doherty but it’s understood that Wolves will let the 28-year-old go for around £16 million. It’s way under what the club should be willing to let the Irish international go for.
It’s understood that Wolves value the defender at £20 million pounds and have rejected Spurs’ opening offer of £12 million but the club’s look set to reach an agreement on the player somewhere in the middle. The deal looks to be completed in the coming days, leaving Wolves’ first-team squad looking extremely threadbare – worryingly with only two weeks to go until the Premier League season resumes.
Maitland Niles deal up in the air
Wolves were reportedly close to sealing a deal for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles earlier in the week but those reports may have been a little premature but Wolves are still interested in the player. Wolves opening offer of £15m for Ainsley Maitland-Niles had been rejected by Arsenal and Wolves are expected to go back with a higher offer according to Sky Sports.
Talking Wolves can reveal that another unnamed club were interested in securing Maitland-Niles’ signature but the player is more sold on a move to Molineux but is also open to staying at Arsenal. The promise of first-team football and the chance to work under Nuno is thought to be some of the reasons why the 22-year-old is open to a move to Wolves.
It’s unsure if Wolves do meet Arsenal’s valuation whether the player will make the move and whether he will be played in the right-wing-back position that’s going to be left open once Matt Doherty has departed.
Wolves interested in Matvieynko
Wolves are among a number of Premier League clubs reportedly interested in Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matvieynko according to 90min. It is suggested that the 24-year-old could be allowed to leave for around £20 million but other Premier League and Champions League clubs are interested in the left-sided centre back.
Wolves eyeing Valencia full-back
Wolves have reportedly lined up a move for Valencia full-back Thierry Correia as they brace themselves for Tottenham to firm up interest in Matt Doherty. Correia (21) is a right-back but can also play on the left to provide cover. It’s not thought that Correia, who is Portuguese, would be ready to come straight into Wolves’ first team.
Doucoure snubs Wolves
Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré has reportedly ‘rejected’ a move to Wolves, Fulham, and Hertha Berlin. It’s reported that the French man would prefer a move to Everton according to reports in France. We understand that this may not be the case and that Wolves may not be even interested in the player but are just being used as a negotiating tool by Doucoure’s agent.
Sanson liked with Wolves again
Marseille’s Morgan Sanson is reportedly on the radar of multiple Premier League clubs including Wolves. The 26-year-old is valued at around £25m according to the Mail.
