This is the first in a series of posts where I will be covering players that have been linked with Wolves. My aim is to give a bit of background to the player and discuss whether he would be a good fit in the Wolves squad, specifically for players from leagues outside of the England that many Wolves fans may not know as much about so this will hopefully help give you a bit more knowledge about potential incomings. The first player I will be covering is Jesus Corona.
Jesus Corona
Corona has been heavily linked with Wolves recently (as well as Everton and Chelsea) and the 27- year-old Mexican currently plies his trade with FC Porto. His nationality and the fact he plays in the Portuguese Primeira Liga maybe two very good reasons he has been so heavily linked with Wolves in recent months, however, it would be an added bonus to bring in a player that not only has experience in a heavily lusophone squad but also is good friends with Raul Jiménez through their time with the Mexican National Team, so he would gel well with the team from the get-go.
The winger is great on the ball and is considered one of the best dribblers in Europe. He has impressed at Porto for four consecutive seasons, each season being better than the last, topping off this season with four goals and eight assists in the league.
The main reason I think he would be a great addition to the squad is his adaptability, he’s comfortable on both wings, with excellent all-round ability and this season has been played primarily as a right-wing-back, and so I could see playing the left/right wing-back roll in Nuno’s favoured five at-the-back formation perfectly. This would allow him to place more focus on his attacking abilities, whilst also having a strong defensive side to his game.
Talent such as Jesus Corona are the type of players Wolves need to bring in to add some depth and quality which would allow the squad to move onwards and upwards with their success. I could see him being a success at Wolves, being deployed all over the pitch and helping give another dynamic to our attack, supplying plenty of chances to the front men and getting on the scoresheet as well.
My only qualm with him would be whether he has enough physicality for the Premier League, as he stands at 5″8 and is not particularly strong, however, his low centre of gravity, as well as his high work-rate during games I believe, will more than make up for this, as proved by João Moutinho.
How much would Jesus Corona cost Wolves?
It’s understood that Porto are willing to sell their main talent this Summer as the club are in real financial trouble. The only viable way out of that trouble would be to sell their prized assets in Corona, Telles, Pereira and Otavio who’s today been linked with a move to Wolves too.
Many of the above-mentioned players would be available on a cut-price deal and well below their minimum fee release clause agreed by both Porto and the player.
However, Porto hold Corona in such high esteem that they’re not willing to let him go for anything less than his €30 million release clause which is still a small price to pay for such a vastly experienced and talented individual.
Having said that, a bid marginally south of that mark may just tempt Porto into a brokering a deal as they look to put straight their financial woes.
According to the trusty Football Manager database, Jesus Corona earns a reported £26,500 a week and would probably double his wages (if not more) if he made the switch to Wolverhampton Wanderers. His wage demands would also fit in Wolves’ salary bracket for players even if they didn’t qualify for Europe this season which looks extremely likely anyhow.
A player of Corona’s quality would be a welcome addition to Molineux – even at the quoted €30 million price tag.
