Well, that was a derby day for the ages, wasn’t it? Once again, this Championship outing is proving to be infinitely more entertaining than the hammerings that we faced this time last year in the Prem; however, that also means that no game is simply “easy”. The brummies, well up for the occasion, were arguably the better side and Wolves, despite the mishap of a certain non-footballer, should be happy with the point, even though they appeared the favourites. These are my main takeaways from today’s game.
Good – The fast start
Wolves, as of recent, haven’t been notorious for fast starts, whether that be individual matches, or to seasons themselves. However, Fer Lopez gave Wolves an early lead with a striker’s finish, on the end of Rodrigo’s tempting low cross. This allowed Wolves to control most of the first half, and not have to chase the game, which has been something that we have been familiar with for a long time.
Good – The return of the Lad (Krejci)
With the injury of our main set piece taker, Trippier, you might expect that Wolves would go back to their ways of last season, being utterly shite at set pieces. However, Peixoto’s new coaching staff seem to have been working hard with the group, as that second goal was beautifully orchestrated, headed in by Krejci, on his return to the starting XI. Thank god he’s staying – he looks much more comfortable in that backline than Toti, and hopefully we will tighten up at the back in the coming games.
On a side note (I am about to criticise him) – what a flick on by Andre.
Bad – The second half
Well, it was almost as if Wolves didn’t turn up for the second half. The home side had almost complete control, pegging Wolves back time and time again. We failed to get out of our half consistently and had very few clear periods of possession.
The one major opportunity that we did get, Armstrong smashed well over the bar. He needed to do better there, especially considering his record against Birmingham, with 12 G/A in 12 games prior to this match.
Bad – THAT moment
Do I need to say anything? Seriously? Subject 38 is not a real footballer.
We’ve tried to back him and give him the confidence that he needs to look like he actually wants the ball at his feet, but my word, the bloke is simply allergic to it. Trippier, hurry up, please.
