West Ham 0-2 Wolves Player Ratings

A confident 2-0 display at the London Stadium proved that although Wolves had a 100 day break from their last competitive fixture, this did not create any issues for Nuno’s men. A reserved first-half performance, with the most threatening moment coming at Wolves’ goal, however, after the break and the introduction of the substitutions, the players found themselves effortlessly wandering into the opposition’s box. Good momentum to take for this feast of football.

Rui Patricio

For a first game back, Patricio can be relatively pleased with how he commanded his area. West Ham were trying to place their big men on him for the corners and every time the ball came in, he scooped the ball into his grasps with little to no pressure. Quiet day at the office for Wolves’ man in the sticks. 6/10

Matt Doherty

Confident display from Doherty who never struggles to glide past players with ease. He showed signs of this in the first half but grew into the game in the second half and combined well with Traore to deliver the all important, perfectly lofted ball in the box for Neto’s volley. A testament to a player who has risen through the leagues with Wolves and showed his undeniable quality. 7/10

Willy Boly

Cool, calm and collected from one of the league’s top centre backs, it is no coincidence that Wolves have kept another clean sheet with Boly in the back line. The fact that Wolves purchased Boly for a fee that looks so minimal compared to the norms for players these days is something we must all be so grateful about. Confident on the ball but also disciplined enough to know when danger was in the air. 7/10

Conor Coady

The skipper, who seems to have an everlasting engine, was not given a great deal to contend with from West Ham. I believe he dealt well with the physicality of Antonio, something which he has struggled with in the past. Provided some lovely long-range passing and commanded his back line well. 7/10

Romain Saiss

I felt Saiss struggled a bit in the first half with the West Ham right side and seemed a bit leggy compared to his defensive partners, but as the game grew, so did Saiss. Close call in the second half but timed his tackle to perfection to prevent the West Ham danger. He has comfortably made the left centre back role his own and has began to become more mature in this role. 6/10

Jonny Otto

Jonny is such a solid, dependable defender and proves it consistently week in week out, going about his work quietly. Made a few good attacking runs and provided more as an outlet on the left side. Dealt well with the West Ham attack and supported Saiss where necessary. 8/10

Leander Dendoncker

Fairly quiet game from Dendoncker, a player who is known for his distance covered in a game, it was no surprise that Nuno decided to start him today. The work rate, although fairly unnoticed, does not have a minimal impact for the grand scheme of things. Could also have been played through a few times but football is a game of ifs, buts and maybes. 6/10

Ruben Neves

Easily Wolves’ best midfield performer of the day. Another mature performance from a man still so young. 89% pass accuracy which also includes pinpoint forward passes, it’s just a joy to watch this man progress and become one of the best in the league. A highlight moment showcasing his defensive and attacking abilities, by tackling the counter-attacking Anderson and then setting off a precise long ball to Jota. Brilliant. 8/10

Joao Moutinho

Another elite player that makes football look so easy. For 5’7 he never struggles to impact a midfield and dictate the flow, he did that again today, arguably a more quiet game from our resident vino lover, but delivered several teasing balls into the box. We can’t wait for him to wave at us again in the Molineux. 7/10

Diogo Jota

Jota caused numerous problems for the West Ham defence with his physicality and his dribbling ability, however, the decision making was a bit off today which is in contrast to the hot form he was in before the shutdown of football. Can only put this down to the lack of football. Rest assured, he will be back firing as per normal over the next few weeks. 7/10

Raul Jimenez

Did Jimenez stop playing football for 3 months? I didn’t think so. He combined well with Jota throughout the game and was unlucky to not be rewarded with goals in the first half. As soon as Traore entered the field, Jimenez’s eyes lit up and we all know how deadly that duo has been this season. Rose well to meet a perfectly scooped ball into the box, an ever so familiar sight. Tirelessly ran and chased lost causes and also tracked back where required. A perfect striker, who also broke the record for the most goals from a Mexican player in a Premier League season. 8/10

Substitutes

Adama Traore

Weekly, I am running out of superlatives to describe this man. He was absolutely phenomenal today and props to Nuno for deciding to pack the midfield and bring on Traore later in the game. Aaron Cresswell must dread these fixtures. As soon as he came on he was an instant threat, dribbling through players as if they weren’t there and ultimately changed the game when placing the perfect cross onto Jimenez’s head. The onslaught did not stop there though, he hypnotised the West Ham players with his dancing feet and placed Doherty through who ultimately delivered a precise ball for Neto’s beauty. Adama Traore he is so wonderful. 9/10

Pedro Neto

I was intrigued to see Neto back, I was keeping tabs on his social media page during lockdown and it was evident that he wanted to improve the physical side of his game and today I believe he did look a lot stronger on the ball after a few physical match ups. A man who has been rather unlucky in front of goal this season, courtesy of VAR, got what he deserved today and oh my word, wasn’t it a beauty. The left-footed thunder volley was not being saved by 2 keepers let alone 1. Improving weekly and excited to see how he progresses. 7/10

Ruben Vinagre

Cameo performance, nothing to note down for the young defender. N/A

Morgan Gibbs-White

Show of faith from Nuno to give Gibbs-White a cameo. Not enough to note on his performance though. N/A

Molineux

How can Wolves finish the season?

It’s been over three months since that behind closed doors match in Athens that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Little did we know it would be the last football match we would watch in a while. The Covid-19  pandemic is what brought all action to a sudden stop.  After lockdown, many regulations and precautions put in place, the wait for Premier League action is almost over.  Action resumes tonight with Aston Villa facing Sheffield United and Man City facing Arsenal. Wolves will have to wait to play their first match as they face West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday.

What’s next for Wolves?

Before we start looking at the upcoming fixtures and how the season could pan out, let’s have a look at how we Wolves were getting on before the pause.

Wolves amassed a total of 9 points in the last 5 matches (2 wins and 3 draws), placing Wolves in 6th with 43 points – 5 points away from 4th placed Chelsea and 5 points ahead of 12th placed Everton.

You could throw a blanket over the clubs placed between 5th and 10th in the league as the race for European football qualification hots up. Any dropped points could be costly.

Wolves have also progressed well in the Europa League. Wolves are currently in the last 16 having already played and drawn the first leg 1-1 away vs Olympiacos.

UEFA have announced that  Europa League quarters, semis and final will be one-off knockout games and will be mini-tournament to be held in Germany from August 10th to the 21st. Wolves v Olympiakos 2nd leg is on either August 5/6 but a decision has yet to be made on whether the game will be played at Molineux or in Germany.

The times, dates and locations for Wolves’ first three fixtures have already been confirmed by the Premier League. The times, dates and locations for the remaining five fixtures are still to be confirmed by the league.

Unfortunately, all these fixtures are behind closed doors and the congregation of fans outside the stadiums will not be tolerated, resulting in the suspension of the respective match.  Obviously, one of the problems caused by this is what will happen to all the season ticket holders?  Wolves have informed that they will issue all season ticket holders free Now Tv passes so they can watch all the Wolves fixtures on Sky Sports. Along with this and the many great initiatives Wolves have had, they gave the fans the opportunity to see their faces appear in the South Bank for the remaining four home matches.

Wolves’ run-in and concluding the season

The only team that Wolves will have to face that are currently above them in the table is Chelsea, on the final day but Wolves shouldn’t underestimate their other opponents. All of the remaining fixtures are winnable, it would be unrealistic for me to say we would win them all though. That’s why I’m going to say we will end up getting around 20 points placing us in 5th position.

As for the Europa League, I honestly believe we could go all the way and win it.  I also see the fact that it will be played in August once our Premier League season is over, as a plus because it lets us focus on one competition at a time.  I am cautious side though because I think the task isn’t easy and the teams we could face in the following knockout games aren’t all easy opponents.  Let’s not forget as well that we still have a last round of 16 game vs Olympiacos to think about.

In regards to what a successful season would be, I think placing 6th is a must for us, anything above a bonus – 7th would be a bit frustrating and a hassle to have to play all the qualifying matches to get to the Europa League group stages. For the Europa League,  I think getting to the Semi-finals would be seen as successful but I’m happy we are in it and I don’t think there is a set objective, we take it game by game, push ourselves and see how far we can get.  Who says we can’t dream of bigger things anyway, as Nuno once said: “Dreaming is for free”.

Gonzalo Higuain

Wolves Transfer Rumours – May 30th

Juventus set price for reported Wolves target

Following reports last weekend that Wolves were interested in Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, Juventus have reportedly set an asking price for the Argentine.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Italian giants will be looking for €18 million for the 32 year old who has 12 months left of his contract.

Premier League rivals Newcastle United are reportedly also interested in Higuain and could also make a move if their takeover goes ahead as planned.

We had reported this news in one of our previous Wolves rumours updates but it’s unclear whether there is any interest coming out Molineux. Higuain, 32, doesn’t fit the usual profile for players that Wolves and Fosun have recruited since their arrival. The club now look for younger players who are more likely to improve and come into their peak in their later years where the club can benefit more if the player were to be sold. However, Wolves did bring in Joao Moutinho who was a similar age to Higuain so let’s not rule this one out completely just yet.

Wolves show interest in Valladolid defender

El Desmarque has reported that Wolves have shown an interest in Real Valladolid defender Mohamed Salisu. A number of clubs are chasing the Ghanaian centre back including Atletico Madrid, Bologna, Manchester United and even Watford and Southampton more recently.

However, it is stated that French club Stade Rennes are leading the race to sign the 21-year old who has a £10 million release clause.

It has been reported previously that Wolves were looking to strengthen the centre back department in the upcoming transfer window so this could be one to keep our eye on. With Ryan Bennett looking to have played his last game in the old gold and black for Wolves, it’s looking increasingly likely that Nuno will be bringing in defensive reinforcements for the next season – whenever that may be.

Danny Loader on Wolves’ transfer radar again

Wolves are ready to reignite their interest in Reading youngster Danny Loader according to Sky Sports. The 19 year old’s contract is set to expire next month and Wolves are keen to pounce for the striker’s signature.

It’s said that ‘several’ Premier League clubs are interested in Loader, who had agreed terms with Wolves last summer before Reading pulled the plug on the deal.

Loader has spent his entire senior career at Reading, scoring one goal.
