Player ratings as Wolves lose 1-0 against Tottenham

After Rob’s midweek comments about the newly-confirmed relegated side showing some kind of response, the highest rating would likely go to the weather.

Both sides were slow, lacklustre and quite woeful on the ball. When Wolves were pressured, the defence stood mainly resolute throughout and were only bested by a Matt Doherty error late on, allowing Joao Palinha to prod Richarlison’s wayward effort in the net.

Going forward, however, Wolves offered very little – such is the way of the season. Player ratings below.

Jose Sa – 7

Sa was comfortable in possession and did make some very key saves throughout. There wasn’t very much he could do for the goal that went in and excluding that, he’d be on for a clean sheet.

Pedro Lima – 6

Fans will have been used to watching Jackson Tchatchoua being fast on the break but not so sharp on the ball. Lima didn’t offer speed in behind, but worked the ball well, especially with Joao Gomes.

Matt Doherty – 5

Doc didn’t look poor on his return, but the defending for Spurs’ goal was lazy. He kept three Spurs defenders onside following Richarlison’s effort, which almost guaranteed someone was going to make a connection with it.

Santi Bueno – 6

Another standard display from Santi. Not the fastest, but there’s always an air of calm when the ball is at his feet. Wolves will be hopeful they can keep him for next season.

Toti – 6

Whilst not as comfortable to watch on the ball as Santi, Toti did make some brilliant challenges in the first half especially. One of his better in a Wolves shirt this season.

Hugo Bueno – 6

In a similar fashion to Santi Bueno (though not related), you know what to expect from Hugo and he doesn’t often underdeliver. Comfortable on the ball, put a few nice crosses in and defended well – besides losing out to give Spurs the corner.

Andre – 7

Had a great game in the heart of midfield. Made more defensive contributions than any of the centre halves and retained possession numerous times. Put in a great challenge on Bissouma too.

Joao Gomes – 8

Five more defensive contributions than Andre (who was 2nd), occasionally danced around the pitch with the ball at his feet and nearly scored a beauty of a free kick at the death. It was vintage JG, and fans will be gutted to see him go.

Rodrigo Gomes – 5

It was a difficult game for Rodrigo to get involved in. The best he’s been this season is alongside Tolu, and he was the one to make way for the Nigerian striker. Not many touches, passes or anything to shout about.

Mateus Mane – 6

A much better display from the teenager who caused Spurs quite a few problems, especially drawing fouls high up the pitch. Not setting the world as alight as he had done previously can only be a subtle positive for the dawning Championship season.

Adam Armstrong – 6

What is he supposed to do? He brilliantly had to force Kinsky to perform a circus dive in order to prevent Armstrong having a one-on-one, but with a set-up so focused on width and crosses into the box, he’s likely going to ghost through the game. He is the type of player who can fashion something out of nothing, but it’s not going to happen often against Premier League level defences.

Substitutes

Tolu Arokodare – 5

Tolu offered something going forward for Sa to aim at, but it didn’t go to plan every time. He won 2/5 aerial duels and had 8 touches of the ball in 20 minutes.

Hwang – 3

Sadly, anything Hwang touched fell to nothing. Only one of his attempted passes reached a Wolves shirt, which is less than his fouls committed (2).

Jackson Tchatchoua – 3

Coming on to inject some pace into the team, you would expect him to make use of said pace, but it wasn’t used. His one and only cross fell straight into Kinsky’s arms.
