I told myself I would believe again if we could get points against Liverpool. We not only got points, we got all three, so I’m all in on The Great Escape. Cohesively, that was one of the best defensive performances we’ve had all season. And despite not having a single shot until the 78th minute, we were able to score twice and win. Picking up 7 points against Arsenal, Liverpool, and Villa shows that this team does have the potential… whether it is too little too late or not remains to be seen.
Jose Sa – 8
This was simply a Jose Sa game. Did he make me hold my breath? Yes. Did he make me curse at the TV in fear? Yes. Did he concede at any of those points? No. He had a showstopping save in the 80th, and even got a strong hand to Salah’s strike that ended up finding the back of the net. He also did an incredible job with punches and claims, he was a great disruptor.
Matt Doherty – 6
Another game where you don’t really notice him, but in a good way. He completed his passes, got beat a few times but to where it didn’t result in anything. He came in, kept a clean sheet, and came out.
Santi Bueno – 8
He has been an absolute ROCK in the back these past few weeks. Blocks, clearances, tackles, he has truly been doing it all, and it wasn’t any different today. Barely put a foot wrong today.
Ladislav Krejci – 7
Glad to have him back after the suspension, and he came in right where he left off. As with the others, he was so sound defensively, hardly letting anything past him.
Jackson Tchatchoua – 7
I’m at quite a loss of words with this one. In the first half he looks like he wouldn’t start on a secondary school team, making bad on ball decisions, terrible crosses, and just looking lost. In the second, just as against Villa, he was a completely different player that provided the assist (or pre-assist) for a goal once again. Despite all of my frustrations I have with him at times, he does pull through in the end.
David Moller Wolfe – 8
Wolfe had the tall task of dealing with Salah for the majority of the match, and he did that job extremely well. He was less noticeable in attack than he usually is, but considering he subdued Salah for the whole time he was on the pitch, I have no problems with that.
Joao Gomes – 10
If somebody asked me what it meant to be a proper defensive midfielder, I’d sit them down and tell them to watch Joao Gomes against Liverpool on March 3rd on repeat for hours. He covered every inch of the pitch, three times over. He started attacks for Wolves, and stopped them for Liverpool. 14 duels won, 6 tackles won and 9 recoveries. Absolutely incredible performance.
Andre – 9
Similar to his partner, I’m not sure if he made a mistake today. Completed nearly all of his passes, and absolutely swarmed any red shirt that even came near the ball. And of course, it was the first time ever a team in the relegation zone scored a 90+ minute winner against the reigning Premier League champions. Decent time for your first Wolves goal!
Angel Gomes – 5
I liked his performance in the first half, he did a good job pressing and moving the ball around, but nothing really stood out. I think he got subbed out at the right time, as he wasn’t adding much to the team today.
Mateus Mane – 6
Similar to Angel, he did an ok job but never really stood out. He had some of his signature runs, but they never resulted to anything. I am glad he finally got subbed out, give the legs some rest before a big match on Friday.
Adam Armstrong – 4
To no fault of his own, he just wasn’t the right fit for the match today. Any chance he had to get near the ball, he was absolutely bullied by Konate and van Dijk. He did a good job of pressing as he usually does, but his physicality wasn’t up to it today.
Substitutes:
Tolu Arokodare – 8
You could immediately feel the difference in our attack once he came on. Being able to properly hold up the ball and hold off the Liverpool defense proved a game changer, even resulting in the first goal. Although a shorter stint, one of his better ones in a Wolves shirt.
Yerson Mosquera – 6
Nobody can convince me there is a more fun player to watch. Did a great job filling in for Doc on the defensive side of things, and then before you know it for whatever reason he’s trying to chip Alisson on a 1 on 1.
Jean Ricner Bellegarde – 4
Unfortunately, he practically assisted Liverpool’s equalizer with a bad giveaway. Outside of that, he had another really good match. He does a great job being in the right spot both on the attack and the defense, and he showed that again today.
Rodrigo Gomes – 8
Vitor Pereira committed crimes putting this man at the RWB. About 30 minutes of match time across the last two matches has shown he may be as pure of a left winger as can be. Buzzing that he got another goal, and hoping he can make his way into the starting lineup soon.
Hugo Bueno – N/A
Bueno was only on for about a quarter of an hour, but his impact was both great and hilarious. He did a good job defensively, but the bulk of his time was spent near the Liverpool corner killing away as much time as possible, dribbling around and through the defenders until they finally fouled out of frustration.
