In Scotland, Poland, Turkey and England, a career that covered each corner of Europe is brought to an end after 17 years.

A gifted football player with a wand of a left foot and a wicked set-piece delivery, Barry Douglas finishes his playing days with trophies, memorable moments and an appearance for his country.

Short and sweet at Molineux

Despite spending just one season at Wolves, Barry Douglas is etched into Old Gold history having played an important role in the team that achieved 99 points and a Championship title. The Scotsman featured in 39 league matches as Nuno lead Wolves to the Premier League, a goal in the first away match of the season helped him to become a fan favourite early on.

Douglas grabbed 14 assists which was the joint most in the league that season, the last Wolves player to top this number in a single season was Michael Kightly in 2008/2009 with 19.

A Friday night matchup with Fulham under the Molineux lights saw both goals in a 2-0 win assisted by the flying wingback.

Arguably his finest game for Wolves was the memorable night at Ashton Gate. While Ryan Bennett’s goal and Nuno’s celebrations from the stands stole the headlines, it was a Douglas direct freekick that leveled the score. In the final moments, his freekick from wide on the right was whipped in deliciously to the backpost where Bennett nodded home to send Wolves fans into a frenzy.

Despite being in the same team as Ruben Neves, Barry Douglas was one of the very best set-piece takers Wolves have had and his freekick against Leeds in a 4-1 demolition summed it up perfectly.

Many fans were disappointed that the left wingback wasn’t part of the Premier League side as Douglas moved on to Leeds United for around £3 million.

Title number two in West Yorkshire

Douglas made 41 appearances in the Championship for Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa, becoming a popular figure at the club. The Whites finished 2018/2019 in third position on 83 points but lost out in the playoff semi-final against a Derby County side which was full of young talent.

The following season, Leeds topped the table and Barry Douglas was a title winner once again.

Venturing far and wide

In the summer of 2013, Douglas moved from Dundee United to Lech Poznan in the top division of Poland. In 75 appearances for the Polish side, the Scotsman scored five times and provided 21 assists in two and-a-half seasons.

Lech Poznan won a seventh league title in the 2014/2015 season, denying Legia Warsaw a third successive win.

In January of 2016, Konyaspor signed Douglas as the defender made a 1800 mile switch down to Turkey.

In the remainder of the 2015/2016 season, Barry Douglas helped the side to a third placed finish which remains their joint highest finish in the top division. Douglas also played a role in Konyaspor’s Turkish Cup win in 2016/2017.

Following his four seasons in England, Douglas made a return to Poznan in 2021 where he remained there until 2024, winning a second title and racking up 139 appearances over his two spells.

Closing out in Scotland

A return to his native Scotland playing for St. Johnstone was where Barry Douglas played his final season of football in 2024/2025.

A superb career which saw two Championship titles, two Polish titles, a Polish Super Cup, a Turkish Cup and an appearance for his country, congratulations and all the best in your retirement Barry.
